Imogene Chambers Lewis obituary
- [S24] The Newport Plain Talk, (http://www.newportplaintalk.com), 3 Jan 2001.
Retired farmer, Vaughn Chambers, age 75, of Newport, died suddenly, Wednesday afternoon, January 3, 2001, of apparent heart failure.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Chambers.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor Calfee Chambers, of Newport; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Wayne Ellison; son and daughter-in-law, John and Jana Chambers; and daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Russell Lamb; his grandchildren are, Keenan and Deide Ellison, Sean and Emily Ellison, Michael and Katie Chambers, Thomas Lamb; great grandchildren are Mark, Luke, Jacob, and Gideon Ellison; and sister, Imogene Lewis.
He leaves behind a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.
Vaughn was more than just a loving husband and dedicated father, he was an example of the American success story. Born of farming parents, Roscoe and Irene Schrader Chambers, Vaughn went to war in Europe at age 18, as a squad leader in Co. I 318th Infantry Regiment, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, later to be combat wounded in Germany, receiving the Purple Heart. He was further awarded the American Service Medal, the Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars. After a stay in an English hospital recuperating from combat wounds in 1945, he returned to the United States to marry Eleanor, his "Sweetheart Back Home," on June 3, 1945. Together they bought a farm of 161 acres, built a brick home, and raised three children. Despite neither of them having an education beyond two years in high school, Vaughn and Eleanor saw that all three children were educated to achieve their American dreams. Brenda to become a registered nurse, John a veterinarian, and Jennifer a masters in education. Most importantly, Vaughn achieved the love and respect of a host of friends that transcended all ages and walks of life. Everyone knew him as an open, giving, compassionate man that cared for others and sought out what was right. He taught his children to pay their bills, do their job and treat others well. He leaves a legacy that will endure and a void that will be hard to fill.
