Sarah G. DiCarlo, 86, a long-time resident of Oak Ridge, died on March 5, 2002, in St. Louis, Missouri.
In 1943, Sarah DiCarlo moved with her family back to Tennessee from New York City, to Oak Ridge. She and her late husband, Francis A. DiCarlo, both received citations from the War Department in 1945 for their work on the Manhattan Project.
She was active in St. Mary’s Church for many years, and was a member of the 1943 Club. She recently moved from Oak Ridge to an assisted living facility near St. Louis in order to be near her granddaughter and her family.
Sarah DiCarlo was born in Cosby, Tennessee, the daughter of Isabel and Milas Mathis, and grew up in Newport, Tennessee. Both of her children, Frances D. Shoup (a former author of the “Teen Talk Topics”) column in the Oak Ridger) and Joseph A. DiCarlo, Oak Ridge High School graduates, preceded her in death. She had three brothers, Orville Mathis, Cleve Mathis, and Albert Mathis; and two sisters, Nola Woods and Hazel Bryant, all of whom preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Charles S. Shoup, Jr., a former Oak Ridge resident and currently a resident of Carmel, Indiana, and three grandchildren, all born in Oak Ridge, Mark S. Shoup, an attorney in Apple Valley, California, Elizabeth S. Kehoe, a certified public accountant in St. Louis, Missouri; and Dr. Margo Shoup, a surgeon in New York, New York. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren and several nephews, nieces, and grandnephews and grandnieces.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge, with calling at 10-11 a.m. in the same location. Interment will be at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Frances D. Shoup Memorial Fund, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
