Retired Sgt. Maj. Albert Mathis, 68, of Newport, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Mathis was the brother of Sarah DiCarlo of Oak Ridge.
Retired from the U.S. Army, he served from 1948 until 1972, including service during the Vietnam War, 1971-72. He retired in August 1972 as a sergeant major.
He was the son of Milas and Isabelle McGaha Mathis, who are now deceased.
Mr. Mathis was a member of the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church of Newport, a member of Newport Masonic Lodge No. 234, F&AM, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a 33rd-degree Mason. He was a member of the Cocke County Shrine Club and of the Kerbela Temple in Knoxville.
In addition to his local sister, Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Mathis; a daughter, Sharon Hartsell and her husband, Gary, of Morristown; a son, Kenneth Edward Mathis and his wife, Debbie, of Mobile, Ala.; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Hartsell of Knoxville.
He is also survived by another sister, Hazel Bryant and her husband, Paul, of Strongsville, Ohio; and by several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Nola Woods, three brothers, Orville Mathis, Cleve Mathis and Charles Mathis, and a grandson, Logan Kencade Mathis, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, in the chapel of Manes Funeral Home in Newport with the Rev. Robert Walker officiating.
Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Newport, with members of the Fort Campbell, Ky., Honor Guard conducting military rites with full honors.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, June 2, at the funeral home. A Masonic service will follow at 8.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the National Kidney Foundation of East Tennessee, 4450 Walker Blvd., Suite 2, Knoxville, TN 37917-1523.
