NEWPORT-Like many educators, Wilbur West credits several special teachers and coaches with his decision to enter the educational field. "I was blessed to have several teachers and coaches whose influence and leadership I respected," said West on Tuesday. "Their dedication to their work played a strong role in my decision to become a teacher."
West, who retired June 30 as Cocke County Schools Instructional Supervisor, credits Donna Lewis, Grady Webb, and Clarence Nelson, along with the late Bonnie Roberts, Alice Williams, David Wilds, Clifford Cureton, and Vondle Breeden, with leading him into a career which saw him climb the educational ladder from classroom teacher to guidance counselor to principal to his last position as instructional supervisor.
Along the way he has worked with hundreds of students in the classroom, supervised numerous teachers, many of whom were just beginning their own careers, and assisted three Cocke County Schools Superintendents/Directors in their jobs.
West is a Cocke County native, only child of the late Maurice and Dorothy (Sauceman) West. Many will remember his maternal grandfather, the late Rev. W. C. Sauceman, who pastored many local Methodist churches for over 50 years.
West spent his first seven student years at English Creek Elementary School, transferring to Cosby during a consolidation program. During this time, he found a love for basketball after being introduced to the game by his uncle, the late W. C. Sauceman, Jr.
