J.L. Valentine, age 65, of Newport, passed away Sunday
morning, November 28, at Baptist Hospital of Knoxville.
Mr. Valentine was employed as the grounds maintenance
foreman at Union Cemetery for approximately 35 years. "J.L.
had dug many a grave for a lot of loved ones and now we are
laying him to rest."
Mr. Valentine was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilberry and Ollie
Valentine and son, John Eugene Valentine.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Valentine, of the home;
sons and daughters-in-law, J.L. Valentine Jr. and Amanda, of
Newport and Will Lee Valentine and Anna, of Newport;
daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy Patterson and Burl, of New
Market and Cathy Whitt and Joday, of Rutledge; daughter,
Margie Valentine, of Newport; sisters, Joann Valentine
Stuart, of Newport, Edna Valentine, of Cosby, Vearl
Valentine, of Gatlinburg, Geraldine Valentine, of Cosby, and
Eleanor Valentine Jenkins, of Cosby; brothers, Kyle
Valentine, of Cosby and Newell Valentine, of Newport; 13
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
The family will receive friends, Tuesday, November 30, from
6 until 9 p.m. at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home.
The funeral will be Wednesday, December 1, at 3 p.m. at
Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Suggs and Rev.
L.A. Hayes officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are the board members of Union
Cemetery.
