LEICESTER - Fred Oakley Duckett, 84, of 10 Hookers Gap Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the VA Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Jahu Weaver and Etta Sue Davis Duckett. He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Tanya Duckett and Kimberly Dickerson a brother, Davis Duckett and a sister, Reba Franklin. Mr. Duckett was a man of many talents including operating a sawmill, carpentry, farming, mechanical work and gardening. He was a World War II Army veteran. He served in the 9th Army Division and was involved in several major battles receiving three bronze and one silver star. Mr. Duckett was a wonderful husband, father and papaw and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pauline Hyatt Duckett a daughter, Freda Duckett Nodine and her husband, Donnie, of Leicester a son, Buddy Duckett and his wife, Patricia, of Leicester two sisters, Millie West of Lincoln, Mo., and Thelma Huggins of Leicester two brothers, Donald and Frances Duckett of Leicester and three grandchildren, Jill Dickerson and her fiancee Jonathan Gillespie, of Leicester, Kelly Monk and her husband, Travis, of Morganton and Mindy Worley and her husband, Michael, of Marshall. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Neil Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of N.C., P.O. Box 639, Wilson, NC 27893.
