Alfred Eugene Sweeten, age 79, of Morristown, passed away on a sunny Monday afternoon, July 25, 2005, and the gates of Heaven were opened to welcome their faithful servant to his heavenly home with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Eugene passed away at his home, as he wished, with his family by his side. Eugene was active with the Lion's Club throughout the 1960's and was "Lion of the Year."
He was active in the Boy Scouts with Troop 295 and Troop 91 for many years. The Boy Scouts were very special to him.
He was a long time member of Alpha Baptist Church. He will best be remembered as the "Watchmaker," as he repaired watches in the Lakeway area for more than 54 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred G. Sweeten and Susie Catherine Smelser Sweeten, of Newport; and two sisters, Kitten Decarlo and Ethel McCoig.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Phillips Sweeten; two daughters, Cathy Holt and husband Frankie, and Jeannie Silver and Scotty Moser, all of Morristown; beloved grandson, John Silver and wife Lisa, of Sevierville; sister, Louise Kilgore, of Brandywine, Maryland.
Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Alpha Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Hendrix and the Rev. John K. Fultz officiating.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Cemetery in Newport.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the services.
