Jake A. O'Neil, born April 12, 1912, at Sand Mountain, Alabama, the eldest son of Andrew J. and Mary E. Montieth O'Neil, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2003.
He worked for Stokely Van Camp and the CCC during WWII. He then went to work in retail lumber until retiring in the late seventies. After retirement he continued working as Court bailiff for Cocke County until the eighties.
An avid sportsman, when he was younger, he played softball with the men's city league. Another passion was hunting with the Sportsman Club and his most cherished partners, Royce McNabb and W.B. Robinson. Later in life, he became a collector of antiques, especially country kitchen clocks.
Also preceding him in death are his sister, Pearl; brother, Jess; loving wife, Rosetta; and faithful son, Walter.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Mary E. and Royce Lance, of Leicester, NC, and Christine and Festus Talley, of Newport; daughter-in-law, Mollie Lovell, of Bybee; grandchildren: Brent Lance, of Wimberly, Texas; Bronwyn and Lt. Col. Andrew Chester, of Virginia Beach, VA; Kathy and David Whaley, Pat and Rachael O'Neil, Katrina and William Eck, and Ryan Talley, all of Newport; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends; brothers-in-law: Glen Gunter, of Monroe, Michigan, and George Gunter, of Newport; and sister-in-law, Roxie Davis, of Mt. Pisgah, NC.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, followed by the funeral service at 8 p.m. with Rev. Edward Young, Rev. Cline Franklin, and Rev. Junior Loveday officiating.
The family and friends will meet at Stokely's Chapel Cemetery at 9:45 a.m. Thursday for the 10 a.m. graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and Smoky Mountain Hospice.
