FAIRVIEW - The Rev. Boyd Cooper Owenby, 86, of 86 Old Number Nine Road, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a brief illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a retired Baptist minister and had preached for 43 years in Henderson and Buncombe Counties. He was a member of Emma's Grove Baptist Church and a graduate of Fruitland Bible Institute. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of V.F.W. Post No. 891 and a former member of the Fairview Lions Club.
He was a son of the late Robert L. and Altha Jenkins Owenby and was also preceded in death by a son, Ernest Phillip Owenby, sisters, Myrtle Harper, Bernice Owenby and Faye Owenby, and a brother, Charlie Owenby.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Irene Howard Owenby of the home son, Charles D. Owenby of Fairview sister, Margaret Owenby of Boone grandchildren, Pamela Nunez, Diana Wyatt, Terry Abernathy, Vince Owenby and Tracy Briggs niece, Shirley Saunooke and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Emma's Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Scott Thompson and Hilton Moore officiating.
Burial will be in Emma's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Nathan Wyatt, Vince Owenby, Eddie Saunooke, Roby Harris, Luis Nunez and Johnny Keever serving as pallbearers and Dr. William Fowler and Boyce Lytle serving as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Emma's Grove Baptist Church.
