William T. Cate, age 87 of Maryville, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at Fairpark Nursing Home. He operated J & K Grocery Store on West Broadway for 40 years until his retirement in 1980. He was a member and deacon at Maryville First Baptist Church. He was elected to the Maryville City School Board and served as Chairman. Mr. Cate was a member of New Providence Masonic Lodge #128 F & A.M. and he was also a long-time member of the Maryville Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Johnson Cate; sisters, Mary Gardner and Grace Cochran; brother, E.J. Cate Jr. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas W. and Edith Cate of Maryville and John and Loretta Cate of Maryville; son, Stephen Cate of Knoxville; grandchildren and spouses, Jeff and Donna Cate of Franklin, Cathy and Gary Rogers of Knoxville, Mark and Cathy Cate of Maryville, Wes and Melissa Cate of Knoxville and Lori Cate of Knoxville; 7 great-grandchildren, Joe Wright of Knoxville, Alex, Chelsea, Caroline and Andrew Cate all of Franklin, Bailey and Abbie Cate both of Maryville. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, Smith Mortuary. Funeral service at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, Trinity Chapel, Smith Mortuary with Rev.
