Whitehead, Roy Lillard, age 89, - a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather, continued his journey into Heaven on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Roy was a proud member of the Greatest Generation, a man of good character, and a devoted family man. Roy grew up in the Bearden community and had a passion for working to help the family get through the Depression Era. As a young boy, he was a caddie at Cherokee Country Club and worked at UT Agricultural Farm. He served in the American, EAME, and AP Theaters during World War II, engaged in the Battle/Campaign of Northern France, received the Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Ribbon, all Theater Ribbons, and one bronze service star with Company B 787th Military Police Batallion of the Army of the United States. After military service, Roy became a master carpenter and site foreman, employed by A.R. McMurry Construction Company. He was a member of Carpenters Local 50 and an employee with the State of Tennessee. Roy worked to build homes, manufacturing sites, hospitals, churches, and schools throughout Knoxville, Maryville, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He enjoyed being a doer of good deeds for others serving his Lord as Deacon and Building Committee member at Rocky Hill Baptist Church, coaching and supporting baseball teams in Lonsdale, Metro-Knoxville, Rocky Hill, Bearden, and Chilhowee, playing golf with family and friends, searching for golf balls, fishing, and working in his lawn and garden. He served as Precinct Party Leader in many local, state, and federal elections. Roy's greatest moment was when he became the proud husband of his loving wife Mary Margaret Pryor Whitehead. Roy was a loving husband and model of what a father should be. Roy was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Margaret Pryor Whitehead; twin sons, Billy Ronald and Jerry Donald Whitehead; beloved father and mother, Charles A. and Beulah S. Whitehead; great-grandson, Taylor Blake Whitehead; sisters, Willie Mae and Dorothy; brothers, Earl and Melvin; special cousin Rufus Knott. He will be missed by his son, Gerald and daughter-in-law, Linda Whitehead, granddaughter, Amy and husband, John Wilcox, grandson, Gregory and wife Anita Whitehead; great-granddaughter: Mackenzie, great-grandsons Jackson, and Grayson; special friend, Jake Bowling; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church, 5302 Nails Creek Road, Maryville, TN 37804 or the Kidney Foundation of East Tennessee. Services will be private.
