Rio, Russell, age 84, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at UT Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville and a Veteran of the US Army serving during World War II. He graduated from Montana State University with honors and was a member of Tau Beta Pi fraternity. He retired from General Electric with 35 years of service where he was honored as an inventor. He held several patents. Preceded in death by parents, his first wife and mother of his two children, Lenita; two brothers, one sister, and two nieces.
Survivors
Survived by devoted wife Frances Rio; son, Gary Rio and wife, Kimberly; daughter, Sharon Rio and partner Barbara Hill; daughters, Pat and Kay Humphreys; sons Ed Humphreys, and Steve and wife Christine Humphreys; grandchildren: Brian Rio and wife, Lori; Josh Butner and wife, Lisa; Mary Frese and husband, Howard; Kristi Dukes; Katie Gugliotta; Valerie Humphreys; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Sheldon and Kermit Rio; several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the “Reaching Beyond” fund c/o First Baptist Church 510 West Main Street, Knoxville, TN 37902 or the Alzheimers Association.
Service
Funeral service 2:00 PM Sunday, First Baptist Church, Knoxville, Dr. Bill Shiell, Rev. Dave Ward, and Rev. Charles Maynard officiating. Family and friends will meet at the rotunda at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday at 1:30 PM for interment services with full military honors provided by East Tennessee Volunteer Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Sheldon, Kermit, and Brian Rio; Ed and Steve Humphreys; Earl and Roy Ogle; the late Lloyd Cannon; the late Fred Cobb; Jack Eubanks, Pat McGlothin, Jim Elliott, the late Robert Nagel, and the late JD Price. Family will receive friends on Saturday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
