U.S. Veteran Walter White, age 89 of Walland, went home Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Liberty Assisted Living in Maryville. He was a Christian and a member of West Millers Cove Primitive Baptist Church in Walland. He is preceeded in death by his wife, Hazel Rathburn White, brother Charlie and sister-in-law Nora, brother Lonnie and sister-in-law Ora Mae, brother Lillard and sister-in-law Annabel, brother Ernest, sisters Sarah, Suzie, and Mary Jane, brothers-in-law Roy Drinnen, John Long and Arlie Miller, son-in-law John Smith, and great-granddaughter Madison Anne Hedberg. Survivors include daughters Freddie Smith of Knoxville, and Shirley White of Stone Mountain, GA, son Michael White and his wife Brenda of Newnan, GA; sister Bertha Lee Miller of Morristown, brother James “Hubert” White and his wife Margie Lee of Walland. He also leaves behind a grandson, Ricky Holt and his wife Debbie of Walland, and granddaughters Sherri Hedberg and her husband Bill of Maryville, Traci Shearer and her husband Tony of Valdosta, GA, Amy Elder and her husband Ebo of Newnan, GA, and Bethany Hodnett and her husband, Josh of Hindsville, GA. He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren Caitlin, Jenny, and Colton Hedberg, Caleb and Emily Shearer, Mattie, Abbie, Gabbie, and Addie Elder, Heather Goins and her daughter Keilei, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Walter was born December 18, 1919 in Thorn Hill, TN. One of nine children, he grew up on a farm in Grainger County. As a young man, he joined the CCCs and lived and worked in Cades Cove until his call to Alcoa Aluminum in 1940. He was a WWII veteran who served in Patton’s 3rd Army during the Battle of the Bulge and received numerous commendations including the Bronze Star. He married the love of his life, Hazel, on April 11, 1941 and lived a full life, raising three children and enjoying fellowship with family and friends. He retired from Alcoa after 42 years. He was an avid sports fan and loved Walland Girls Basketball, traveling all over the state to watch them play. He was a beloved storyteller with an incredible sense of humor. All who were lucky enough to know him, loved him. He will be dearly missed. His family would like to thank Liberty Assisted Living for their love and care, Max Hodge for his faithful visits, and nephew, Fred Ray White for his love and support. Receiving of friends will be Wednesday, July 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Miller Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Milburn White and Michael White officiating. The Entombment service will be on Thursday, July 23, 2009 11:00 AM at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with Max Hodge officiating. www.millerfuneralhome.org
