ATKINS, HARRY - age 82 of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on October 21, 2010. He was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. A veteran of the Korean War and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Mr. Atkins was born on August 30, 1928. He graduated from Austin High School in 1946 and Clark College (Atlanta) in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Mr. Atkins was a standout basketball player in the U.S. for the Clark College Panthers and in Europe for the U.S. Army team. He was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal in 1953. He completed post-graduate coursework in psychology and sociology at Knoxville College, Construction Theory and Practices, Blueprint Reading, and Supervisory Techniques at Cleveland State University (Fenn College), real estate law, finance, sales and brokerage at the Ohio Real Estate School, and 160 hours in Law Enforcement Training at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio). In 1983, following a successful career in public service, he retired from the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) after rising through the ranks from Housing Coordinator (1967-1969), to Modernization Co-coordinator (1969-1971), Chief of Safety and Security (1971-1976), Chief of Maintenance (1976-1981), Special Assistant to the Director for Energy Conservation (1981-1983), and Executive Assistant to the Director and Executive Buildings Manager (1983), while also consulting part-time in security for industrial, commercial and institutional property managers. He was a member of the Glenville (Ohio) Opportunity Center Executive Board and the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials and sponsored a YMCA basketball team for twelve years. Following his retirement from CMHA, Mr. Atkins joined the private sector as Operations Supervisor for Hallmark Management, Inc. In 1987, he retired from Hallmark to manage his residential and commercial properties and spend more time with family. Mr. Atkins is survived by his devoted wife Beverly (Yvette) Atkins of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughters Linda Atkins Stafford of Shaker Heights, Ohio and Lisa Karen Atkins of Nashville, Tennessee; stepchildren Tracy L. Scott of Wickliffe, Ohio, Carla Adams of Atlanta, Georgia and Anthony Wilson of Knoxville, Tennessee; grandchildren Raleigh and Hayden Stafford, Robert and Jonathan Adams, Carla Wilson, Trevon Scott; many loving cousins including Mrs. Dorotheda Lewis and Almeda and Wilbur Hawkins; classmates and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry Earl Atkins and Alberta Stafford Atkins, his brother, Charles James (Elnora) Atkins, aunt Malinda Roxella Stafford Mostella, and loving cousins Alease Black and Delores (Fred) Johnson. Services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 with Visitation (11-12 noon) and Funeral Services (12 noon-1:00 pm) at Shiloh Presbyterian Church, 904 Biddle Street, Knoxville, Tennessee, and interment at the Tennessee State Veteran's Cemetery, 5901, Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee.
