COULTER Jr., Charles R., age 85 of Maryville, died Thursday, October 4, 2001, at Fairpark Healthcare Center. He grew up on Sevierville Road, graduated from Everett High School and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After six years employment at ALCOA, he was called to active duty with the 32nd Infantry Division in World War II. He served 42 months in the Pacific Theatre and saw combat action in the Philippines, New Guinea and Papua. Charles was wounded in the Battle of Buna, New Guinea. He received the Purple Heart with Clusters,
the Bronze Star, The Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the South Pacific Campaign Medal with Four Stars. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Major.
Charles returned to Blount County and entered the family business, Coulter Florist, with his father, brother and sister. Among his many interests was his love of collecting and restoring antique automobiles, mainly Ford vehicles. He helped establish and was a charter member of the East Tennessee Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America; he held memberships in many car clubs, was an avid license plate collector and member of the License Plate Collectors Club of America.
He was a charter member of the Maryville Rotary Club and held the Honor of having 44 years Perfect Attendance and was named a Paul Harris Fellow; was a Board Member of Sam Houston Historical School House, Maryville Utilities Board, Maryville Housing Authority and the University of Tennessee Alumni Board of Governors.
Mr. Coulter was of the Baptist Faith, was a longtime member of the VFW Post 5154, the American Legion Post 13, and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles R. Coulter, III; father, Charles R. Coulter, Sr; mother, Nancy Millsaps Coulter; brother, Aubrey Coulter and sister, Helen Coulter.
Survivors include: wife, Ethel M. Coulter; daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Ralph Hicks, Cheryl and Dave Long all of Dothan, AL; grandsons, Gregory Hicks of Charlotte, NC, Dr. Scott Long of Dothan, AL; grandson and wife, Jeffrey and Cameron Hicks of Birmingham, AL; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Phyllis Coulter; nephew and wife, Kenny and Ann Coulter; several great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews; special friends, Jerry and Frances Hodge.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Sharp officiating. The interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Grandview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Friday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home.
The Maryville Rotary Club will serve as Honorary Pall Bearers.
