• Jerry L. Hodge, head of Twin City Dealerships and antique automobile enthusiast.
• Kenneth E. Coulter, owner-operator of Coulter Florists, the oldest retail business in Blount County.
• Mark E. Cate, special assistant and policy advisor to Gov. Bill Haslam.
Times’ Editor Dean Stone explained that The Daily Times Wall of Fame was established to recognize leaders who have graduated from the local high schools and have become leaders in business, education, government and service to others. The purpose is to hold those honored as examples of what can be achieved by those high school students receiving academic letters.
Those inducted receive a plaque and their names are engraved on a permanent plaque on display in the lobby at The Times.
Kenneth E. Coulter
Coulter is 93 years of age, arises at 4 a.m. daily, as he has for the past 70 years, now walks across Sevierville Road to Coulter Florist, lays out the work for the day and then often returns to his hobby of restoring antique Ford automobiles. He graduated at Everett High in 1936.
Coulter Florists, founded in 1896 by his parents, Nancy Millsaps Coulter and Charles Coulter Sr., is the oldest retail business in Blount County where the Coulter family has lived for 200 years.
He worked on the family farm and at Coulter’s Florist and Greenhouses until 1932 and then also worked at ALCOA’s Tennessee Operations where he was a foreman. In 1941, he entered service, serving four years as a supply sergeant in the Pacific with the 33rd Infantry Division.
Coulter is a member of the Tennessee Nursery and Landscape Association Hall of Fame. The florist has been commended by the Tennessee General Assembly and the Blount County Commission on being named one of the nation’s top 250 florists.
Owner of Coulter’s Ford Haven, at one time he had the largest collection of “rag top” Fords in the world. Officials from Ford Motor Co. frequently came to Maryville to visit the collection, occasionally seeking spare parts for antiques. He was founding member and first president of East Tennessee Region Foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains Maryville-Alcoa Automobile Club of America in 1956.
One of the founding members of the National Hillbilly Homecoming, held here in 1953-1967, he frequently drove dignitaries in Model T or Model A Fords in the Homecoming parades. In his hosting he developed a long-lasting relationship with Gov. Frank G. Clement and U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver.
Coulter is a 32nd Degree Mason and active member of First Baptist Church of Maryville.
He and his wife, the late Phyllis Nicely Coulter, have one son, local banker Kenny Coulter and wife Ann; four grandchildren, Assistant Junior High Principal Brett and wife Maria, Kenna (Mrs. Denny) Garner, Kim Stafford and Karen Coulter; four great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild.
