Mr. Barney Ray Suttles, 91, of Newport, was born September 25, 1912, and passed away Sunday morning, March 7, 2004, after a short illness. Barney was a businessman in Newport and North Carolina for many years. In his retirement years, he became an avid camper and fisherman with many friends. Many people remember what good cooks he and his wife, Kima, were. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kima Lillian Costner Suttles; son, Eugene T. Suttles; and infant daughter; brothers, Walter, Lonnie, and Oscar Suttles; sisters, Bessie Shuford and Fanny Burnette; and parents, Frank and Lillie Suttles. Survivors include his son, Howard Ray Suttles, and wife, Janie, of Newport; grandchildren: Walter Ray Suttles, of Kansas; Jeffrey Suttles and wife Sarah, of North Carolina; Carol Sprouse, Jenny and husband Orville Seay, and Guy Suttles, all of Newport; Linda Melda, of Ohio; 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James Suttles, of North Carolina, and Lennie Suttles, of Newport; sisters, Margaret Hensley, of North Carolina, and Faye Jackson, of North Carolina. Other survivors include special sisters-in-law, Sally and Betty; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends, P.A. and Joyce Clark. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ransom Hall officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2004, prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or charity of your choice.
