Leon Hulon Binder
Leon Hulon Binder died on Jan. 27, 2009. Born Dec. 17, 1942, in San Diego, Calif. Preceded in death by father, Horace Binder, Maryville. Survived by wife, Debbie Myers Binder; mother and stepfather, Detta Reba Griffith and Jack Griffith of Dandridge; sister and her husband, Rebecca and Steven Seher and family, of Long Beach, Calif.; daughter, Linda Houston and her two children, Michelle Stinnett and Ernie Stinnett, Jr., of Maryville. Leon graduated from Friendsville High School, received his BA and MS degrees from the University of Tennessee. He retired from the computer industry, then taught at Maryville College, retired again and then sold real estate and finally decided to retire for good in 2005. In his younger years he raced boats and dirt bikes. He was an avid golfer until he decided to return to UT last year to pursue a graduate degree in Philosophy. He also enjoyed fishing, and the Smoky Mountains were like a second home to him. Family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, with a memorial service at 3 p.m. at Smith Trinity Chapel with Rev. James "Tater" Wells officiating. Zula Josephine Hamby Ervin
Zula Josephine Hamby Ervin, age 94, of Reliance, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at NHC Health Care of Athens. She was the oldest member of Union Grove Baptist Church, Tellico Plains. She was the daughter of the late William L. and Betty Taylor Hamby, born May 9, 1914. Preceded in death by husband of 70 years Oscar H. Ervin, stepmother Betty Elizabeth Hamby, daughter Nola Jean Price, great grandson Andrew Monger, son-in-law Rev. Robert Thompson, sisters Leona Ervin, Vera Burchfield, Edna Rogers and Beatrice Hilderbrand, brothers Kimbrough, Clarence and Carl Hamby. Survivors: Children and spouses: Beuna & Bob Smith, Merrellville, Ind., McKinley "Mac" and Faye Ervin, Maryville, Alma Thompson, Madisonville, David & Betty Ervin, Maryville, Jerald & Peggy Ervin, Niota, Jerry & Willene Ervin, Reliance, Linda Dodson, Athens; Son-in-law: Robert Price, Reliance; 17 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren, 6 Great Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Mimi Hood, Blanche Aaron, both of Maryville, Irema Long, Dunnelle, Fla. and Betty Mills, Johnson City. Brothers: Billy Joe Hamby, Tellico Plains, Kenneth Hamby, DeKalb, Ill. Sisters-in-law: Bobbie Hamby, Kingsport, Betty Hamby, Etowah. Several nieces & nephews. Funeral 11 a.m. Monday, Union Grove Baptist Church, Rev. Kenneth Watson and Rev. Tony Cansler officiating. Interment in Maple Springs Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Tellico Plains.
