U.S. Veteran Carbet Hilluard Stephens age 84 of Maryville passed away Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the family home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born July 5, 1922 in Burnsville, North Carolina, Hilluard grew up in the Citico area of Vonore, TN. He served in the U.S. Army for five and half years and saw action in World War II European Theatre. After 32 years of employment, he retired from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and remained an avid big orange fan for many years. Hilluard was preceded in death by parents, David and Mary Jane Stephens; two brothers, Horace and McDaniel Stephens; one sister, Carrie Foister. Survived by his wife and caregiver of 59 years, Dorotha Jean Stephens; children, Shirley Jones of Dresden, TN, Doyle Stephens of Maryville, Susie Zuller of Portland, Oregon and Robin Hartman of Gulfport, MS; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; sisters, Gerlene Dupes and Mary Jane Nichols of Vonore. Family and friends will meet at 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at Clark’s Grove Cemetery for the graveside and interment service Danny Jones officiating.
