Duggan, men’s clothing store owner, dead at 75
Kenneth Ray Duggan, who owned several men’s clothing stores in the area for more than 50 years, died Wednesday at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was 75.
Following a two-year stint in the U.S. Marines, Duggan joined his father, D.H. Duggan and brother, Don, in the men’s clothing business.
The Duggan family first started peddling clothing at the old Blount Hotel site, according to Todd Duggan, Kenneth’s son. The first legitimate store was located in downtown Maryville, currently the site of Tomato Head, 211 W. Broadway Ave.
At one time, the Duggans owned as many as five stores in cities as far away as Louisville, Ky. After the elder Duggan died, Kenneth Duggan closed several stores and sold others. Todd Duggan said he and his father operated two stores in Maryville, one at the West Broadway location and the other at Foothills Mall, for about nine years. The downtown store was closed in about 1995.
In 2004, the Duggans moved the store to Hunters Crossing shopping center. Kenneth Duggan kept working at that location until the first part of December, Todd Duggan said.
“My dad was a quiet person, and had a very dry sense of humor,” Duggan said. “He always had a laid-back approach to sales. He never pressured the customers.”
Family and friends will assemble for the graveside service and interment at 2 p.m. Friday at Grandview Cemetery.
Smith Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
