GARNER, JOSEPH ELLIS, JR. - age 76, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, January 24, 1999, at Fort Sanders Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Mr. Garner was also a WWII Army Veteran, where he reached the rank of corporal and served in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Among his decorations and citations were the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with five Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph E., Sr. and Meda Ruth Garner; infant son, Michael; brother, Charles Garner; and granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline Garner; son, David L. Garner and wife, Margaret Gail; daughter, Deloris A. Tolson and husband, Jim; brother, Clarence Garner; sister, Mary Francis Nichols; grandchildren, Kim House and Jennifer Garner; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Cameron House; nieces, nephews, and many friends. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 26, 1999, from 7-9 p.m. at Highland Memorial Funeral Home. Family and friends will gather at graveside Wednesday, January 27, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery for funeral service with Rev. Leonard Turner of Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church officiating. He will be assisted by the Associate Pastor, Rev. Don Caperton.
