Bruce J. Hembree , age 82 of Townsend went home to heaven on Tuesday, November 20, 2001, at the family home. He was a Veteran of World War II. He joined the Marine Corps on June 3, 1944, where he was a Rifle Sharpshooter and Machine Gunner. He participated in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, Volcano Island, February 19, 1945-March 16, 1945, with the Fighting Fourth Division. He was very proud to have served his country.
Preceded in death by: son, William (Billy) H. Hembree .
Survivors include: wife of 55 years, Sarah Huskey Hembree ; sons and daughters-in-law, Connard and Jennette Hembree , Kenneth and Faye Hembree , Charles and Debbie Hembree , and Robert and Donna Hembree all of Townsend and Timmy and Kim Hembree of Walland; sons, Melvin Hembree and Elmer (Pugg) Hembree both of Townsend; daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Tommy Shuler, Joyce and James Adams, Robin and Donnie Adams all of Townsend; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2001, in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 23, 2001, at Tuckaleechee Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
