- [S24] The Newport Plain Talk, (http://www.newportplaintalk.com), 1 May 2015.
Richard Charles ( Dick ) Graves passed into Heaven on April 26 , 2015 , with his family at his side having fought a courageous fight against various ailments.
Dick was born January 15, 1939 in Washington, D.C. and was adopted by the most loving couple a child could have, George and Ruth Graves , on January 24, 1939.
Raised and educated in Washington, D.C., Dick drove a cab, worked for the phone company Potomac Bell and subsequently taught himself the ins and outs of stock brokering, landing a job with a large firm in Washington, D.C. His success in stocks subsequently allowed him to relocate his family to the Daytona Beach area in 1970 when he was offered and took the position of CEO in a local family-owned brokerage firm. Dick was diversified and not only did he take on the responsibilities of the day-to-day operations of the firm, he also used a small savings to purchase a motel and numerous rental properties which he insisted on maintaining and managing himself along with his wife, Sylvia, and three children. When the brokerage firm subsequently dissolved due to the passing of the firm's owner, Dick went back to his roots, the phone company, and took a position with Southern Bell which eventually became AT&T and then Verizon, working there until his retirement while still maintaining his growing portfolio of investment properties, which he continued to do along with his wife Karen until his passing.
Dick was pre-deceased by his parents George and Ruth Graves , and his first wife Sylvia.
Dick leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife and life partner Karen (nee Hill); children Richard (Cathy), Terri Madewell (Burt), youngest son Steve and stepson Shannon; his grandchildren: Eric, Collin, Brad, Kelly and Richard (III) as well as a growing crop of great-grandchildren; his sister Elaine Ulrich (Lloyd), and nephews and nieces Doug Ulrich (Kim), Jill Kettles (Steed) and Andrew Ulrich (Jessica). Also to cherish his memory is Michael Jackson, who was a friend and able body when the load got too heavy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the hospice care facility in your immediate area. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at a later date to.
