Was killed on a logging train in Elkmont. Wreck of Shay 4,above junction of Rough Creek. The boiler exploded after the safety value had been tied down. Fireman Sam McClanahan was killed. Sam's grave marker says he was born in 1891 and died in1917,yet the published reports on the train wreck in which he died says it's 1914. At the Blount County Courthouse was found a will that appointed William H. McClanahan administrator over Sams will. It says witness on hand and seals 29 day of March A. D. 1917.
In contact with Rick Turner ,President of The Little Railroad Co. Muesum he stated that most if not all of the LLR&LC records were destroyed after operations was ceased. He says as a result they have two references that they use for historical accuracy (1) The Last Train to Elkmont by Vic Weals and Whistle over the Mountain by Bill Hooks. He says that in the case of Sam,Vic Weals states the date for the wreck of #4 as March 1914 and that Sam died of severe burns. Rick wanted to know if Sam lived another 3 years suffering from the burns and then died. He also said that Bill Hooks used Weals as his source.
After I showed him the records and documents he said he believed the documents and wondered if the wreck was 1914 or 1917. He says that there was a caboose wreck in 1917 and ask wondered if Sam was involved in that even though he is not mentioned in the wreck. The Shop # that Sam was on is 880.
WWW.shaylocomotives.com say the accident accured in Dec. of 1914. The website says the locomotive was named "Mabel" but Bill Hooks says #3(772) was Mabel and #4(880) was "George".
In the Knoxville Journal 2/15/1979 (Thursday) in Tennessee Travels with Vic Weals it tells of the train wreck and the death of Sam McClanahan.
