DILL, SARAH KATHLEEN "SALLY" - Ross 65, passed away on Tuesday, February 01, 2011. Sally was born in Smyrna, TN on August 19, 1945 to the late Loretta Hicks Ross and Gordon B. Ross. Sally graduated from Central High School in Knoxville, TN in 1963. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from the University of Tennessee in 1967. Sally worked part time at the Bon Air Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library until she decided to enroll at the University of Tennessee's Master of Library Science program. She earned her Master's degree in 1985 and began her professional career as a librarian and later became the branch manager at the Halls Branch of the Knox County Library System. Sally was a long time member of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville. She was an active member in the adult singles class, and was instrumental in the development of the church's Community Worship program. Sally's kindness and willingness to help others has had a positive impact on so many people in the Knoxville community. Sally was preceded in death by her mother, Loretta Hicks Ross. She was survived by her father, Gordon B. Ross; her stepmother, Nina Ross; her sister, Susan Ross Marshall; her brother in law, David Marshall; three half brothers: Don, Tim, and Chris Ross; two nieces, Sarah Marshall Morgan and Rebecca Marshall; her grand-niece Ellie Morgan and her grand-nephew Jack Morgan. Sally valued her family and friends so much and looked forward to every opportunity to spend time with the people she cared about. Sally was loved by many dear friends, and laughingly earned the distinction of being the "president" of PALS, short for "Pizza Above Library Science" ; a group of life-long friends she made during her days at library school. Sally was never far from a book. She loved reading, telling stories to her nieces and children at the library, and was always quick to recommend an author or a title. Sally also enjoyed cooking and travelling. Sally's favorite destination was a cozy cabin at Tims Ford Lake in Winchester, TN. There Sally could enjoy time with friends and family, curl up with a good book on the porch, and watch the sun rise in the morning. Perhaps Sally's most favorite past time was cheering for the Lady Vols basketball team. On game day, Sally's wardrobe consisted of orange, more orange, and some more orange. She was a "die hard" fan, even earning a spot on a Knoxville News-Sentinel's "Go Vols Extra" segment about the team's greatest fans. Sally had the best attitude in life. Whether at church, at the library, watching a game, or spending time with family and friends, Sally took nothing for granted. She always wanted to know how everyone else was doing, putting herself last. She will be long remembered and always loved. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 11 AM at Gentry-Griffey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Andy Ferguson officiating and special friend, Rev. Laura Rasor speaking. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until service time. Family and friends will gather at 2:30 PM at Union Cemetery in Newport, TN for interment. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to Cancer Support Community, Sutherland Avenue, Knoxville, TN (865)546-4661, or Community Worship at Church Street United Methodist Church, PO Box 1303, Knoxville, TN 37901.
