Day, local political activist, dies at 63
Graveside services will be held Sunday for outspoken political activist Walter W. (Sunny) Day II, of Maryville, who died Wednesday night at UT Medical Center. He was 63.
Longtime friend Booty Miller of Maryville described Day as a unique person, "someone who, if he saw a wrong, he wanted to stand up for it. He had strong beliefs about things, such as government. He felt it was the people's government and they need to speak up."
Day ran for political office several times, including the state legislature, partly because he did not want to see Tennessee implement a state income tax, Miller said. Derrick Harmon of Louisville said he met Day when the pair worked together on the House of Representatives campaign of Tona Monore-Ball earlier this year.
"He was very politically oriented," Harmon said of Day. "He had a sharp political mind, he could think quick on his feet and could rebuff arguments."
Both men described their friend as having a sense of humor.
"He told a lot of jokes and really made you laugh," Harmon said. "He was a jolly kind of guy."
Day was an employee of BWXT Y-12 in Oak Ridge for the past 17 years. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Wanda.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, Knoxville.
