SFC (Ret) Joel David Hill April 17, 1928- February 18, 2008 SNELLVILLE, AL— SFC (Ret) Joel David Hill, age 79, resident of Snellville and former resident of Smiths, AL., died on Monday, February 18, 2008 at Eastside Medical Center, Snellville, GA. Graveside services with full military honors are scheduled for Friday, February 22, 2008, 3 p.m., at Lakeside Memory Gardens, Phenix City, AL., according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Phenix City, AL. Mr. Hill, son of the late Patton Samuel Hill and Lola Holt Hill, was born April 17, 1928 in Hartford, TN. He was both a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army veteran, serving his country honorably for over 20 years. Mr. Hill served in both the Korean Conflict and also the Vietnam Era Conflict and received the Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC) and the Distinguished Service Medal for his heroism. After retirement from the military, he began a career in the Heating and Air Conditioning Industry. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW and was a local country and western musician where he performed in Columbus and the surrounding area. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Jo Hill; a son, James Hill; and a great-grandson, Mark Wells. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Billie Jo Hill of Snellville, GA.; two daughters, Wanda Mason of Snellville, GA., and Gilda Carden and her husband Wayne of Dallas, TX; two sisters, Gelena Dockery and her husband Luther and Corrina Messer, both of Newport, TN.; five grandchildren, Kimberly Chen and her husband John of Beijing, China, Timothy Joel Donaldson of Birmingham, AL., Christopher Mason of Snellville, GA., Holly Bernard and her husband Robert of Columbus, OH., and Erin Hart of Seale, AL.; three great-grandchildren, Owen Chen, Leah Bernard, and Robert Bernard, Jr.; other relatives and friends.
