Hayes, Sr., Charles David –age 85, of South Knoxville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, November 9, 2008. Charles served in the United States Army Company B, 207th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II. He received 5 Bronze Stars and was a POW. After returning from the war, he began his career as a plumber. Charles was a longtime member of South Knoxville Church of God. He was preceded in death by parents, Lola and Skeet Hayes; first wife, Beulah Hayes; son, Charles D. Hayes, Jr.; son-in-law, Jerry Ashford and sisters, Helen Clifton and Ruby Mae Headrick.
Survivors
Survivors include wife, Stella Hancock Hayes; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Brownlow Thomas of Knoxville; daughters, Diane Ashford and Donna Marshall, both of Florida; stepsons, Steve Hancock and wife, Tania of Knoxville, Mike Hancock and wife, Jennifer of Florida; grandchildren and spouses, David and Teresa Thomas, Emily and Phil Whaley, Martha and Kevin Gale, Jonathan and Brook Marshall, Brian and Rhonda Baker, Chris and Suzanne Baker; grandchildren, Jeff, Tracy and Alex Hayes, Adam Baker, Tisha Hamrick; step-grandchildren, Kari, Jenna and Zane Hancock; brother, Paul Hayes and wife, Evelyn of Rockford; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Service
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, with funeral service to follow at 7:00 PM, Rev. Robert Branch officiating. Family and friends will meet at Stock Creek Cemetery on Thursday for a 1:00 PM interment service. Full military honors by East Tennessee State Honor Guard.
