Former Loudon City Manager Randall "Randy" Warren McGill died Sunday at his Loudon home after a long illness.
Mr. McGill was 49.
During his tenure as city manager from 1978 to 1985, the A.E. Staley Co. was recruited to Loudon and at the time was the single largest industrial investment in the state.
Mr. McGill's leadership oversaw development, construction and industrial recruitment for a 385-acre industrial park, historic-themed improvements for downtown Loudon and park and recreational development.
Mr. McGill also played a key role with the Loudon County Heritage Association in the restoration of the Carmichael Inn, an 1810 vintage log structure.
A Farragut High School graduate, Mr. McGill received a bachelor's degree in economics from Maryville College and a master's degree in planning from the University of Tennessee.
A four-year term in the U.S. Air Force included service in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.
Mr. McGill was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and was honorably discharged in 1972.
His professional career began as assistant to Loudon County Executive Bill Russell.
Mr. McGill then served as county field advisor for the UT Institute for Public Service.
Mr. McGill was preceded in death by his father, Hobart McGill.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Harris McGill of Loudon; daughter and son-in law Kelly McGill Williams and Travis Williams of Philadelphia; mother Alma Cooper McGill of Farragut; and brother Gary McGill of White Pine.
Family members will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at McGill-Karnes Funeral Home in Loudon.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Loudon United Methodist Church.
Longtime family friend and pastor Dr. Lewis Rhodes of Memphis will officiate, along with the Rev. Robert Copeland, pastor of Loudon United Methodist Church.
Loudon County clerk and master Fred Chaney will deliver the eulogy. Chaney and Ron Johnson, Tucker Montgomery, Lynn Davis, Bob Patterson, Gene Lambert and Larry Cate will serve as pall bearers.
Interment will follow in Roberson Cemetery.
