HUGHES, MR. CARL LEE - 79, Jonesborough TN died Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Hughes was a native of Washington County TN. He was the son of the late Annie Slagle and Woodard Hughes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Shirley Reed Hughes. Mr. Hughes retired from Burlington Industries as a department head in the weaving department after 52 years of employment. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and he was a member of the Army Reserve. Mr. Hughes was a member of 1st Baptist Church. Mr. Hughes was a skilled woodworking craftsman and spent numerous hours in his workshop on projects both large and small. He also loved animals and raised miniature horses with his grandson. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lois Hodges Hughes of the home; two sons Danny Hughes and his wife Janice of Knoxville and Gary Hughes of Phoenix, Arizona; one step daughter Dr. Sharon Nelson Rush and her husband Michael of Jonesborough; one step son Sam Nelson and his wife Melisa of Limestone and step-grandsons Brandon Nelson of Limestone and Eric Collins of Knoxville; brothers Bob Hughes and wife Annie, Watauga TN, Don Hughes and wife Pat, Lemual Hughes and wife Gladys all of Johnson City; a sister Mary Hughes Garland, Johnson City; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude for the skillful care and compassion from all of the doctors and nurses during Mr. Hughes' hospitalization. A memorial service for Mr. Carl Lee Hughes will be conducted 2:00 pm Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Jonesborough United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be a host of friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions may be made to Music Scholarship Fund at Jonesborough United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 115, Jonesborough, TN 37659.
