Four-year-old goes the distance
SEVIERVILLE - Four-year-old Avery Huskey is clearly proud as she shows off her medal.
The Sevierville youth received it recently for completing a marathon - over the course of two months, that is.
Avery, the daughter of Chad and Stephanie Huskey, was a participant in the Covenant Kids Run, held in conjunction with the Knoxville Marathon. She began her challenge in January at a kickoff run at the Knoxville Zoo.
During the past two months, Avery kept a log documenting her progress and ran and walked at various locations, including a course near her home, the Sevierville Community Center, the Sevier County High School track and the First Baptist Church of Sevierville track. Her final 1.2 miles (she logged a total of 26.2 miles. the length of a marathon) was run in Knoxville on March 28, when she began at the World's Fair Park Sunsphere and finished at the 50-yard line in Neyland Stadium.
"She's pretty active," mom Stephanie said. "She plays soccer and basketball and goes snow-skiing (her father is a skier)."
When Avery's grandmother saw information about the Covenant Kids Run in the newspaper, all of the Huskey family became interested.
"We're all trying to get healthy, so we walked and ran a lot as a family," Stephanie said.
Avery, a preschool student at Covenant Christian Academy, has found a new hobby.
"I love running," she said, smiling. "It's so cool. When you run, the breeze comes at you."
Her longest trek at one time was four miles, when her family hiked in the Smoky Mountains.
"She likes to go fast," Stephanie said. "We didn't know if she would have the fortitude to do this, but she did it with minimal complaining."
At her final run, Avery's family was waiting for her when she crossed the finish line. Her grandmother was holding a stuffed rabbit Avery received at the event.
"I couldn't remember its real name, so I named it "Rabby Richard Huskey,'" she said.
Full of energy, Avery excitedly reports that she loves all of the Disney princesses, but her favorite is Jasmine of "Aladdin." She enjoys watching "Phineaus and Ferb" on the Disney Channel and "The Backyardigans" on Nickelodeon, as well as playing with her dog, "Prince Duke Huskey" (better known as just "Prince").
Because she also enjoys watching "Factory Made" on the Discovery Channel with her parents, she would like to become a factory worker when she grows up.
Until then, she'll continue to stay busy with her many interests, including running. She plans on doing at least two more runs sponsored by Covenant Health.
"It's pretty fun," she said.
