• Notes

  Madeleine Cole was born in Beverly, Massachusetts under the name of Deborah Cole, daughter of Joseph Cole and Sarah Randall. On 10 August 1703, Saco, Maine was attacked by the French and the Abenaquis Indians. Joseph Cole and his son were killed and Sarah Randall and her daughters, Deborah and Mary, were taken to Montreal as prisoners by the Indians. Sarah Randall was bought back by Pierre Boucher, the "Seigneur" of Boucherville. Sarah Randall as a servant and her two daughters moved into the house of Pierre Boucher. Deborah Cole was baptized into the Catholic church under the name of Madeleine Cole. After the war between the French and the English ended, Sarah Randall returned to New England but Madeleine and her sister Marie-Therese Cole decided to remain in New France.
