William E. Conner, 88, died Thursday, June 5, 2008.
Born in Sevierville, Tennessee to M.L. and Hester Conner he moved to Brevard County in 1961.
He graduated with a bachelors and masters degree from the University of Tennessee, earning a second masters degree from Florida Tech.
Bill served in the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant. A radio operator on a B25 Mitchell he was shot down on his 33rd mission and held captive in a German POW camp.
A systems analyst he worked for the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and for Pan Am and CSR at Patrick Air Force Base. He was also the owner/broker of W.E. Conner Realty.
A former Melbourne City Councilman, he was a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church and Wesley United Methodist Church. Active in veterans organizations with the American Legion, VFW, Past Commander of Space Coast Ex-POW's and State Commander of Florida DAV. Bill also was a member of the Melbourne Moose Lodge.
His family includes his wife, Mattie Kelley Conner; daughter, Susan Conner Learned and her husband, Mike Cermak; son, Ted Conner and his wife, Carol; daughter, Kim Machon and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Mary Pat Godigkeit, Andrew Conner, Wesley Conner and Nicole Machon; great grandchildren, Sara Tweedle and Kyle Godigkeit. One of ten children he leaves his sisters, Carolyn Sexton and Mildred Clemons; and brothers, Frank Conner and Mack Conner.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bobbie Conner in 1989.
Funeral Information
Calling hours will be Saturday, June 7, 2008, from 3pm to 5pm at the South Brevard Funeral Home, Melbourne.
Funeral services will be at 2pm, Sunday, June 8, 2008, in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow at Florida Memorial Gardens, with military honors.
