William “Bill” Conway Boruff of Sevierville, passed away Thursday, May 08, 2008. He was born April 9, 1927 in Monroe County, Tennessee to Denham and Pearl Sloan Boruff. He graduated from Sweetwater High School and Tennessee Technological University with a degree in Agronomy. He taught elementary school in Monroe County and vocational agriculture in McMinn County for four years.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served as an instructor and headed the program Veterans on the Farm.
William came to Sevier County as a District Conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1959 and retired here after 34 years with the Soil Conservation Service. William gave technical assistance to individuals, groups, organizations, cities, counties, and state government in reducing the costly waste of land and water resources.
Mr. Boruff served as past President of Tennessee Council of Soil Conservation Service of American and East Tennessee Chapter Soil Conservation Service of America and East Tennessee Chapter Soil Conservation Society of America.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville, American Legion, TN Outdoor Writers Association, and Sevier Economic Development Committee. He served as past Chairman of County Conservation needs, and past Vice-President of Sevier County Sportsman Club, Secretary of Sevier County Jaycees, and served on the Sevier County Defense Board.
William loved outdoor sports, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and coached Little League ball teams for many years.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Doris Jean Boruff; parents Denham and Pearl Boruff and sister Bea Greene.

Funeral service 7 PM Friday in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Melvin Carr officiating. Interment 11 AM Saturday in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be C.H. Tarwater, Jack Denton, Chuck Atchley, Rush Parrott, Jim Atchley, James Runyan, Bud Shields, Johnny King, and Frank Gibson.
