SYLVA, N.C. - Raymond Dennis Large Jr., 59, of Cane Creek Road, died Saturday, October 18, 2008, at his residence after over two years battle with cancer.
A native of Cocke County, Tenn., he had lived in Jackson County for the past 30 years, he was a practicing attorney with Hunter, Large & Sherrill in Sylva, a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He was an avid outdoorsman with an affinity for camping, canoeing, fishing, hunting and skiing. Raymond Large was also well known as a fitness enthusiast with a passion for weight lifting. He volunteered his time to several organizations, most notably he was a Scoutmaster for Troop 914 of Cullowhee, N.C.
Most importantly, he lived a life of accomplishment with a constant happiness and love for life itself that was infectious to all of those who truly knew him.
He was son of Susan Cureton Large, of Cosby, Tenn., and the late Raymond Dennis Large Sr. Preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Barbara Laird.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 29 years, Alison Laird Large; two sons, Raymond Rady Dennis Large III, whom is in law school in Greensboro, N.C., and John David Large, of the home; one sister, Phyllis Gentry and husband, Ennis, of Cosby, Tenn.; father-in-law, Melvia R. Laird Jr. and wife, Carole, of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers-in law, David Laird and wife, Felice, and their sons, Connor and Hamson, of Washington, D.C., and John Laird and wife, Nancy, of River Falls Wis.; stepsister-in-law, Kim Daugleish.
The funeral service was held at 7 p.m., Monday, Sylva First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bill Serjak officiating. Burial will be at noon Tuesday at Waters-Large Cemetery in Cosby, Tenn.
The family received friends 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20, in the fellowship hall of the Church.
