U.S. Veteran Rufus “Jim” Rogers, age 86, of Greenback, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, March 3, 2008 at Mountain View Assisted Living in Loudoun. Rufus proudly served his country during World War II and received several medals during his length of service. He was a survivor and endured many hardships during his life. His courage, strength, and perseverance were some of his many attributes. Rufus will be forever remembered for his humorous wit, laughter, and zest for life. Rufus was born on December 22, 1921 to the late James Houlk and Ida Reagan Rogers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Obiedy Ellison Rogers, his cherished son William (Will) Rogers, infant daughter Brenda Rogers, sister, Pauline Davis, and brother, Herbert (Hoover) Rogers. He leaves behind his loving family to mourn his passing, sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Ann Rogers of Greenback, Rufus Jr. (Rufee) and Donna Rogers of Maryville, Ronald (Ronnie) Rogers of Greenback, daughter and son-in-law, Judy Rogers (devoted caregiver during his last years) and Rick Bass of Maryville; grandchildren, Brian and Kevin Rogers, Cory and Amber Rogers, Chris and Adam Rogers, Hannah Bass, and many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; sister, Georgia Reed of Greenback; brothers, Charles Rogers of Greenback, and Bruce Rogers of Seymour; sisters-in-law, Shirley Rogers of Greenback and Lois Willocks of Friendsville; brothers-in-law, Harold Ellison and Raymond Ellison both of Maryville; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends in the Greenback, Maryville, and Friendsville communities as well as at Mountain View Assisted Living Community. The funeral service will be held 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. David Cooper officiating. Family and friends will meet 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Cloyds Creek Cemetery for the graveside service and interment with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville, (865) 982-6041, www.millerfuneralhome.org.
