Esther Bible, noted school system employee, dies at 84
Esther Lee Bible, whose career with the Cocke County school system stretched over 40 years, died Wednesday evening at her Bybee home following a long illness.
She began her career with the school system in 1945 when the late W. N. Denton, school board member for the Third District, recommended her as teacher at Holt's School. The late Lagretta C. Parrott was Cocke County Superintendent of Schools at the time.
When a clerical position in the superintendent's office became available, Denton informed Bible who transferred to that job.
This position evolved into that of bookkeeper for the Cocke County Board of Education, a job she held until her retirement on April 30, 1987. During this time, she served under five superintendents: Parrott, the late E. G. Bryant, the late James Everett Freshour, Beth Ogle Freeman, and Charlie Seehorn.
Both Freeman and Seehorn had high praise for Bible's work.
"She was a wonderful worker," said Freeman this morning. "She was very precise and knew the books and workings of the office and school system better than anyone else."
"I also considered her a very good friend," Freeman continued. "You always knew exactly where you stood with Esther."
"After I became superintendent and worked with her for some time, we discovered that we both descended from Joseph Webb, one of Cosby's pioneers, and we enjoyed that," Freeman said.
Seehorn also recalled Bible's dedication and hard work. "She was a wonderful person," he said.
"And remember, she did all her work by hand. We had no computers in those days," he added.
Born 20 April 1924 on the farm of her grandfather Aden Holt, Bible was the daughter of the late Darius and Martha Ann (Lindsey) Holt, one of their six children. Her siblings, all deceased, were John Burnett Holt, Austin Seaward Holt, Gerald Holt, Mary Agnes (Holt) Hayslett, and Virginia Lois (Holt) Smith.
She began her own educational journey as a student at the Fairground School, later transferring to Newport Grammar School. Shortly after graduating from Cocke County High School in 1942, she married Franklin C. Bible on 13 July 1942 in Greenville, SC.
In addition to her career in the educational system, Bible was also widely known for her dedicated church work. For many years, she taught Sunday School at Clay Creek Baptist Church and later at Bybee United Methodist Church.
After joining West End Baptist Church, she served as secretary-treasurer of the Xyzingers Sunday School Class, a position she filled until a few years ago. She cherished the opportunity to send flowers and cards to church family members and friends.
Her favorite hobby was working in the beautiful flowers which surrounded the family home off Hwy. 160. Neighbors and friends often received bouquets from her gardens.
Bible is survived by her husband of 66 years and their two children: Cheryl Bible Presnell and David Bible, both of Newport. Four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive, as does one sister-in-law Juanita Bible.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Manes Funeral Home.
