(January 14, 1936 - August 6, 2014)
U.S. Veteran Larry Gordon Hawk, age 78, of the Salem community passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Born January 14, 1936, Larry was the only child of the late Bill and Vava Lee Hawk. After graduation from Parrottsville High School and while serving in the United States Air Force, he met his wife of fifty-six years, Eileen Joyce Allison of Flitcham, England. In 1958 he returned to the family farm where he engaged in agriculture for the remainder of his life. Though dedicated to home and family, Larry never lost his love for airplanes. The throb of airplane engines from fly-overs always piqued his excitement while air shows and books about airplanes and flying were among his favorite interests. His stories about the Air Force related how profoundly those experiences impacted his life. With an inclination toward practical creativity, he enjoyed building mechanical things. He once used the steering system and transmission from an old car along with other scavenged parts to build a complete riding lawn mower. Remembered for his kind and gentle nature, Larry is survived by his wife Eileen and daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Randy Winter of Parrottsville, Rhonda and Jeffrey Winter of Knoxville, and Anita and Ken Fast of Chattanooga. Grandchildren are Gavin Winter and Alison Winter Phillips and her husband Cody, Paige and Heather Winter, and Stephanie and Stephen Fast. Brother-in-law Eric Allison resides in Flitcham, England. Sister-in-law Brenda Walker lives in Chesterfield, England. Nieces and nephew are Claire Walker Sanderson (Shaun), Kevin Walker (Karen), Nicola Walker Stone (Christopher), and four great nieces, all of England. Larry is preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Bridget Allison. Visitation 6 to 8 PM at Manes Funeral Home on Saturday, August 9th, will be followed by the funeral at 8 PM officiated by Rev. Patrick McLaughlin. Interment will be 2:30 PM Sunday at Salem Lutheran Church. Pall bearers are Junior Gregg, Don Strong, Barry Norris, Jeff Nease Honorary pallbearers are Clyde Ottinger, Burl Ottinger, Howard Lafollette and George Fillers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to WELCA of Salem Lutheran Church, 3001 Salem Road, Parrottsville, TN 37843.
