NEWPORT-People who watched or heard about the five-year-old boy in the City of Newport pool who almost drowned Thursday afternoon, are calling his rescuing lifeguard Austin Cobble a hero.
Cobble, who is a young-looking 17-year-old, however, seemed uncomfortable with the attention he was getting from well-wishers at the pool after he saved a boy's life at about 1:55 p.m.
Cobble, on duty as a lifeguard on a stand, spotted a boy with his head about one foot below water in the middle of the four-foot high shallow end of the pool. An adult woman standing next to the drowning boy was not aware of the boy's predicament, but Cobble quickly assessed the situation and took action.
"He was completely under," recalled Cobble after the incident. He added, "His face was pointed to the top of the water...He wasn't moving, so I just jumped in."
Cobble said he was apparently the only person at the pool who noticed the emergency.
