Cades Cove memories
Among the last family to leave Cades Cove were two sisters, Rebecca Renfro, who left in 1974 when she married, and Amy Hudson, who left in 1968 when she went to college. They are both descendants of Lois and Kermit Caughron.

Piece of Cades Cove: Dulcimer auction nets $1,650 for group
By Linda Braden Albert
A piece of history is now aiding in preservation efforts of Great Smoky Mountains National Park's most popular destination, Cades Cove.
A dulcimer, made of red spruce salvaged from the Kermit and Lois Shuler Caughron house in Cades Cove, was auctioned by the Cades Cove Preservation Association and presented to the winning bidder at the CCPA Christmas party Dec. 6 in Townsend. Bernard Andrews, of the Big Cove community in Huntsville, Ala., made the bid of $1,600 about 20 seconds prior to close of silent bidding on Oct. 31. One bid came in shortly after the midnight deadline for $50 more, but since it didn't meet the deadline, Andrews was proclaimed the winner.
"We checked the time and found his bid was the last one we could accept," said Ruth Caughron Davis, public relations officer for CCPA and a daughter of Lois and the late Kermit Caughron. "He said since we were fair with him, he would pay the higher bid." The total of $1,650 will be used by CCPA in its continuing efforts to preserve the heritage of the Cades Cove community.
"We'll put that money to the projects of working in the Cove, and also in working with our archives," said Davis.
CCPA, in cooperation with Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service, has had an active role in historic preservation in the Cove, such as remediation of cemeteries at the Primitive Baptist, Missionary Baptist and Methodist churches and cleaning the church buildings on a regular basis. Volunteers also provide educational instruction to tourists on Cades Cove history.
Love of Cades Cove
Davis said Andrews and his wife, Ann, travel to Townsend with friends several times each year.
"They love the Cove and just love to come here and visit," she said.
Andrews learned of the silent auction when he visited the Pickin' Porch in Townsend and heard Mike Clemmer playing the Cades Cove dulcimer. After Andrews learned of the heritage of the wood and that the funds raised from the auction would benefit CCPA's preservation projects, he decided to bid.
Clemmer, owner of Wood 'n' Strings, Townsend, had offered to make a dulcimer from the salvaged wood then let CCPA auction it to raise funds.
"The dulcimer is beautiful," Davis said. "We owe so much to Mike Clemmer for handcrafting it."
Originally from schools
The late Kermit Caughron and his wife, Lois, were the last people to live in Cades Cove. After Caughron's death in 1999, Lois moved out of Cades Cove and the National Park Service decided to demolish the home since it was not within the historic time frame, from 1860 to 1910, that the Park Service wishes to preserve in the Cove.
CCPA was given permission to salvage materials from the home, built by Caughron in 1952 from materials obtained from the old Cable School. Some of these were also part of an earlier school, Laurel Springs, which was located on Parsons Branch Road.
