BROOME, WILLIAM ANDREW - age 76, was born into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, after a very brief illness. Mr. Broome was a member of Second United Methodist Church and the Homebuilders Class. Mr. Broome graduated from Knoxville High School in 1945. After serving in the United States Navy, during World War II aboard the USS Canfield, the USS Warren, and the USS Lindenwald, as a Radarman Third Class, he received an honorable discharge, and attended the University of Tennessee for four years. He then began a career in the Real Estate and Insurance Industry that continued for 53 years. The agency he started in 1958, Broome - Broome & Guthe, Inc., was located in the Fountain City area. He was a member of the Professional Insurance Agents Association (PIA) from 1958-1999. He was Agent of the Year in 1987 and 1976. President 1970-1971. Chairman of the Year 1977 and 1986. He served on the Board of Directors from 1967-1972 and from 1985-1991. He was National Director from 1985-1991, Chairman of the PIA National Research and Technical Committee 1987 - 1989, and Vice Chairman of PIA National Education Committee 1990-1991. As a National Director, he spent many years traveling, consulting and lobbying for the betterment of the insurance industry. Mr. Broome was involved in many community activities. He volunteered as Chairman of the Transportation Committee for the March of Dimes Telerama for 13 years. He was also active in the Fountain City Sertoma Club, and was a member of the Fountain City Masonic Lodge 757, as a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Mr. Broome earned his master gardener designation from the U. T. Agricultural Extension Service, and enjoyed sharing his knowledge at not only events scheduled through U.T., but with many who were drawn to and stopped by the extensive gardens at his home. He was very committed to the Lindsay Young Downtown YMCA, where he served on the Board of Directors for several years. He valued the many friendships he found there. He will be most remembered though for his remarkable spirit, received from His Heavenly Father, that enabled him to live a life of service to all he encountered. As a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend - he was truly a gift. It is not a "Good-bye" - it's a "Till We Meet Again." Preceded in death by parents, William Jennings Broome and Mary Mingle Broome sister, Margaret Broome Kirkland brother, Gordon Wayne Broome, Sr. Survivors: beloved wife of 52 years, Barbara Williams Broome daughters, Terrye Morgan Broome Guthe and husband, Phil, who was like a son, Janis Lynn Broome Griffin, Lorri Ann Broome Wagner and husband, Mike Wagner, Jan C. Corbit and Tammy LaFevers, all of Knoxville grandchildren, Andy and Arin Michelle Guthe of Charlotte, N.C., Erin Morgan, Neal, Boone, and Max Guthe, Amanda and Kasey Griffin, Emily and Megan Denton, all of Knoxville great-grandchildren, Devin, Chloe, and Caycee brother, James R. Broome and wife, Sharon of Hickory, N.C. sister, Wilma Glover brother-in-law, Jack Kirkland sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Broome special brothers-in-law, Hoby Williams and wife, Kathy, Fred Williams and wife, Linda three special aunts, Ada Ekstedt, Jo Fleenor, and Gladys Flanagan, all of Knoxville. Mr. Broome also leaves behind a very large and loving extended family. Deep appreciation to Shirley and Fred Delap for celebrating the Lord's Supper with us. The family would like to thank the nurses and health care workers of Covenant Hospice. Your compassion was a balm for us all. A service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Lord officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery with Full Military Honors provided by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers: George Parks, Bill Moore, George Grooms, Bob McDonald, Bob White, and Bill Oldham, Jr. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
