Helen Lois Butler, 76, passed away Wednesday, March 10, at her son’s home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, with her family at her bedside.
Helen was born October 1, 1922, in a log cabin on her grandparents’ Dan and Cora Murrell’s farm in Bogard.
She was the eldest of four daughters of the late Henry and Gladys Murrell Norris.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved sister, Nell Williams, who passed away in 1994.
Helen and Oscar were married July 8th, 1939, and would have celebrated 60 years together this year. After living and working in the local area for several years, the Butler family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she was employed by General Motors. In 1982, she retired after 30 years with the company. She was honored on her last day when the entire plant stopped all operations and her co-workers paid their highest tribute by blowing all whistles and horns as she walked out.
A few years after her retirement, the couple purchased a winter home in Inverness, Florida. Here the couple found and enjoyed an extended family of wonderful friends.
Several years later, a long-time dream was realized by purchasing as their summer home, "The Old Murrell Homestead," where she had spent many of her early years. It was her favorite place to be.
Helen is survived by her husband, Oscar V. "Nig" Butler; son, Tony and daughter-in-law, Betty Butler, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; son, Roland Butler of Medina, Ohio; four grandchildren, David and Toni Butler of North Charleston, South Carolina, and Tommy and Tina Butler of Median, Ohio; two sisters, Gladys Norris of Bogard and Betty Knall of Westlake, Ohio; an uncle and aunt, Eugene and Madaline Murrell of Newport; and they were blessed with five great-grandchildren and an abundance of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Brown Funeral Chapel with Dr. Frank Bell officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Brown Funeral Home.
Interment will be at the Jenkins Chapel Cemetery.
Brown Funeral Home is in charge.
