ESSLINGER, NANCY - Knoxville native, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2006 after a long illness. She was employed by the Knox County Board of Education. A devoted wife, mother, family member, and friend, Nancy will be remembered for her loving spirit and her desire to help others. Nancy was a member of the Baptist faith. Her spirituality and faith manifested itself in the unconditional love she had for her friends and family. Born June 7, 1946 in Knoxville, she was the daughter of Clyde and Evelyn Strange. She was a graduate of Fulton High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University. She was a certified dietitian assistant and worked as a supervisor in that position prior to her most recent love, working with special needs students. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Burlington and the Tennessee Association of Middle Schools. She also served as Mother Advisor to the Burlington Rainbow Girls. She is preceded in passing by her beloved daughter, Janet Lynne, and father, Clyde B. Strange, Sr. Nancy's legacy shall live on in the many lives she so richly touched. Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Leon Esslinger. Nancy and Leon were married on June 18, 1965. Nancy loved to tell the story of the first day she saw Leon. She was 15 and told her English teacher that this is the boy she would marry. Her teacher said that she didn't realize that he was even her boyfriend. At the time, Nancy didn't even know his name. Surviving brothers include Clyde B. (Mac) Strange, Jr. and John R. Strange, both of Knoxville, and Paul B. Doyle of Paris, Tennessee. Her sisters include Barbara J. Shinevare of Richland, Michigan, and Virginia Hans and Lynne Garner of Knoxville several nieces and nephews. Her mother, Evelyn R. Strange, lives in Knoxville. She is leaving her very dear lifelong friends, Geraldine Blair, Sandra Perry, Dolores Miller, and Martie Boulton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Widows and Orphans Fund of the Masons, 100 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37203. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service and interment with Dr. Paul B. Doyle officiating.
