Body found in house being built; woman dead, husband found unconscious
A Maryville woman was found dead and her husband was found unconscious in a Sevier County house Saturday night. Authorities believe the couple may have succumbed to carbon monoxide fumes emitted by the generator running in a closed room.
The deceased female was identified as Carol Leann McCroskey, 40, of Maryville. Her husband, Devon McCroskey, 38, was in ICU at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at the time of the investigation.
According to a press release from the Sevier County Sheriff Office, at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Sevier County deputies and the Sevier County Ambulance Service responded to 2188 Little Valley Road to a medical call where two people were found unconscious in a house.
Officers arrived at the home, which was still under construction, and found a female deceased and a male that was unconscious. The male was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center via Lifestar and the female was determined to be deceased at the scene, the press release said.
The pair was discovered by the builder of the home when he passed by and saw a vehicle in the driveway and went to investigate. The complainant found the couple, who had shown interest in buying the home, inside the home unconscious with a gas generator running along with a kerosene space heater, according to Sevier County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators arrived on the scene and a preliminary investigation revealed that the pair may have succumbed to carbon monoxide fumes emitted by the generator running in a closed room. There were also signs that the pair may have been consuming alcohol while in the home.
An autopsy will be performed on the Carol McCroskey to determine her cause of death. The investigation is continuing.
