NEWPORT - Funeral services for one of Newport's most prominent businessmen, Jim Correll, are scheduled for tonight at Manes Funeral Home Chapel. Correll, 86, died Tuesday after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
For 40 years, Correll was associated with Home Supply of Newport, a firm which supplied building materials to local contractors and builders. Correll and his late brother-in-law Connie Overholt first opened the business off Cosby Highway in 1966, at a time when local building needs increased immensely.
Correll, who had no previous business experience, was encouraged to enter this venture by Overholt, already an established Newport businessman.
"He borrowed the money from his parents," recalls daughter Joann Starkey, "and paid them back over the years."
In 1969, the company's business had increased tremendously and the firm was moved to the old Taylor Grocery building on Broadway, where it continued to be operated until its closure in 2006.
After Overholt's death, his son Robert became his uncle's business partner. Known as a family business, many members of the Correll/Overholt family worked there over the years.
Correll was born in the Point Pleasant community, son of the late Henry and Maude (Turner) Correll.
He attended Talley Memorial School, later Ailshie Grocery and now Rocky Top Grocery.
When World War II erupted, Correll wanted to enter the Army, but was persuaded to remain at home and work on the family farm by his father. His late brother, James "Son" Correll, went to the Army.
After the war, Correll continued to work on the farm. When American Enka opened, Correll found work there, continuing to work for that company for some time after Home Supply opened.
After Home Supply became firmly established, Correll left Enka and devoted himself fulltime to the family business.
He was elected a commissioner of Jefferson-Cocke Utility District in 2001.
As a young man, Correll met the late Agnes Jones on a blind date. At the time, she was a nurse at the old Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. The couple later married and spent their honeymoon at the old Rhea-Mims Hotel in Newport.
The family attended Point Pleasant Baptist Church.
For several years, the Corrells resided with his parents and later built a new home nearby.
In his free time, Correll was a passionate hunter, traveling to many places to hunt quail and pheasant. He loved all animals and was known for bringing home strays found at the Rankin Road dumpster site.
In addition to Starkey, Correll is survived by two other daughters, Karen Correll, Newport, and Sherry Kerr, Dandridge; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Interment will be Friday morning in Point Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
