Claude Amburn 87, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 6, 2007 in his native Blount County. His passing concludes a wonderful, full life that touched many others even to his last day. Claude was a treasure to each member of his family, as evidenced by the turnout for his recent birthday party. Though his warm sense of kindness and compassion can never be replaced, he leaves his many friends and family members with an abundance of terrific memories. Spending just one minute with Claude Amburn would leave you in a better mood. The world will never know a finer gentleman. His character and many acts of giving were evidenced by his duties as a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #519, Mountain View/Maryville. His love for friends and family were evidenced by his timely birthday cards and welcomed visits. He took unmatched pride in everything, particularly family, and in particular his daughter Jan and grandson, Kevin. Claude’s talents and knack for perfections were evident in everything he touched, especially the meticulous detail found in his home and garden. Without question, home was where his heart was. Claude returned home to Tennessee in 1982 after a 32 year stint in Illinois where he enjoyed a successful career with his own painting business and Reynolds Aluminum Company. There was no doubt that Blount County was where he would spend nearly every day of his 25 year retirement. Many Saturdays found him at the Green Acres Flea Market, while other days found him in his garden, visiting family, or scoring strikes at his favorite bowling alley. Claude’s green thumb was guaranteed to harvest a robust garden every year to be complimented by a neatly manicured, emerald lawn. But his talents did not stop there. His abilities as a master gardener were matched by his keen intellect on the chess board. A sly strategist with an unassuming personality, Claude lured many an opponent down the corridor of defeat. “Checkmate” was a familiar phrase uttered by Mr. Amburn. Claude’s unmistakable, friendly voice has now gone silent, but his gentle spirit will echo on. We will forever miss our family treasure.
