MARION PONDER THOMAS, age 84, of White Pine, TN died Wednesday evening, January 19, 2011 after a brief illness. She was born and raised in White Pine,TN and graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1949. She taught school in White Pine and at Clinton City Schools after she married Toliver Thomas and moved to Oak Ridge. After retirement, she and Toliver moved back to White Pine. She is preceded in death by her husband, Toliver, and one son, Dick; parents, Grayson and Katherine Ponder, and three brothers, Truman, Terrell, and Jim. She is survived by two sons; Tom (Anita) of Hobbs, N.M., and David of Knoxville, TN, and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Thomas of Paducah, KY. Also there are three grandsons: Clay, of Albuquerque, NM, Kurt (Jill), of Birmingham, AL, and Allen (Asheley) of Paducah, KY, and two great-grandchildren., Morgan and Knox. Also surviving is one brother, Herschel (Sara) Ponder of White Pine, and four sisters-in-law; Rose Ponder of Baltimore, MD, Elizabeth Ponder, of Johnson City, TN, Kittie Ponder of Maryville, TN, and Wanda Thomas of Jefferson City, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of White Pine, where the service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 1:00pm with Rev. Mark McFadden officiating. Family visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Graveside services will follow at Union Cemetery in Newport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Organ Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 146, White Pine, TN 37890.
