Deceased Name: Arvil Eugene Teaster - 2 Erwin fisherman credited with saving man in fatal Holston River accident
ROGERSVILLE - Authorities have credited two Erwin fishermen with helping rescue one two men whose boat was capsized in Holston River near the TVA John Sevier Fossil Plant (map) on Tuesday. The second man drowned in the accident.
Arvil Eugene Teaster , 65, Rogersville, was killed when he was swept into the water after the boat he was fishing from became swamped by the force of the water flowing over the dam, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reported in a news release.
The boat's other occupant, Scott R. Flinchum, 27, also of Rogersville, was rescued by the fishermen from two nearby boats. Flinchum was taken to Hawkins County Memorial Hospital and is expected to be released today.
The TWRA issued thanks to fishermen Keith Tolley and Ketron Couch, both of Erwin, and Jerry Bussell and Ed Schick, both of Rogersville, for their aid.
"By assisting the victims, it's very likely that they saved the life of Mr. Flinchum and did all they could do for Mr. Teaster ," Hawkins County Wildlife Officer Chris Seay said in the release. "We cannot thank them enough for their acts of courage."
The TWRA also issued thanks for the responses from Hawkins County Rescue, Hawkins County EMS, Hawkins County EMA and the Hawkins Co. Sheriff's Office.
The accident remained under investigation by the TWRA.
The TWRA also stressed the importance of proper life-jacket use as the No. 1 way to prevent boating related fatalities.
"While this incident occurred in hazardous waters, many other fatal boating accident victims have drowned in open, calm waters after unexpectedly finding themselves in the water," the TWRA said in the release." A properly fitted life jacket that is worn in a proper manner is the best precaution a boater can take to ensure safety."
The release noted that wearing life jackets is mandatory for all boaters from the boat ramp at John Sevier Fossil Plant up to the dam.
