Rev. Jay Isaac Greene, age 87, of 240 Wyatt Lane, Hot Springs, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the home of his daughter, Eva Shetley, Thomasville, NC.
Jay was born April 1, 1926, to the late John Anderson Greene and Hulda Elizabeth Wilds Greene.
He was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Hot Springs, NC. He was the former pastor of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Hot Springs, NC.
His hobbies included coon hunting, gardening, and playing his banjo, fiddle, and guitar.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Anderson and Hulda Greene; wives Julie Eulala Woody Greene and Hattie Swanger; sisters Hazel Roberts, Callie Lee, Mae Shelton, Maggie Roberts, and Marie Payne; brothers Nathan Greene, Curnell Greene, Tilmon Greene, Ben Greene, Clifford Greene, Tom Greene, Bob Greene, and Greer Greene; stepdaughter Shirley Adams, and stepson Jimmie Swanger.
He leaves behind his wife Nancy Goforth Greene; daughters Irene (Rex) Norton of Newport, TN; Reba (Paul) Sawyer of Hot Springs, NC; and Eva (James) Shetley of Thomasville, NC; grandchildren Rex J. (Joyce) Norton, Chris (Heather) Sawyer, Paula (Michael) Reese, Schanell (Ricky) Sprouse; step-grandchildren Chris (Tina) Shetley and Eric Shetley; and several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; step-daughters Margaret Ellison, Sharon Turner, Betty Orr, and Alice Haney, all of TN; step-son Glenn (Cathy) Swanger of Del Rio, TN; and several grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren of the Swanger family; sisters Geneva Walters of Georgia and Chattie Manning of Newport. Additional survivors include several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Special thanks to Hospice of Davidson County and all his church family.
The funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Hot Springs, NC with Rev. Rex J. Norton, Rev. Gregg Warren, and Rev. James Shetley officiating. Pallbearers will be Chris Sawyer, Michael Reese, Ricky Sprouse, Glen Swanger, Rex Marion, and Alfred Sexton.
The casket will lie in state from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, May 14, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home Chapel.
