Margaret Gibson Young , age 80, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Oct 9, 2006, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born in Blount County on Oct 27, 1925, Mrs. Young was married for 49 years to James M. Young Jr. She had three children, James Daniel Young of Oak Ridge, David Gibson Young (deceased) and Lucinda Young of Maryville, as well as three grandchildren, David, Benjamin and Jonathan Young of Oak Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Young , and her son, David Gibson Young .
Mrs. Young was a recent resident of Oak Ridge Retirement Community and a longtime resident of Oak Ridge. She was a graduate of Everett High School in Maryville, and earned a master's degree at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Following her graduation, she taught home economics and related arts in rural Appalachia.
Among her many interests, as an early member of the Atomwins Contest Club, she was a winner of a number of national contests and a frequent winner of Bill Dyer's nameless cartoon in the Knoxville News-Sentinel. She held a particular fondness for children and taught nursery school for many years at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. Mrs. Young was a member of the Foothills Craft Guild, and as a weaver and basket maker, employed natural materials in both free and traditional form basketry, as well as teaching classes in basket making.
Mrs. Young was a loving wife and mother who will be missed by her family and those who knew her kind, gentle and creative nature.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at 8 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Stella Roberts officiating. Graveside services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family asks that any memorials be made to East Tennessee Children's Hospital.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary.
